It would seem that Japanese automaker Honda has decided to go all Star Trek on us.
The manufacturer's new prototype, the FCEV Concept, debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show last week, appears like it was designed with hyperspace in mind. And in a strange, twisted way, that's exactly the case.
What we mean is that the FCEV Concept embodies Honda's recent developments with hydrogen. While the automaker is currently co-developing a powertrain with GM for 2020, the one on this prototype is an example of what they plan to offer as soon as 2015.
The underpinnings on this space-age auto are pretty impressive. The bonnet houses a 100kW fuel cell stack with a 60-percent higher power density than any other new Honda fuel cell model. With a full tank, this will give it a range of over 300 miles. Not too shabby.
There is one drawback, however.
While Honda already offers the stylish FCX Clarity as a public hydrogen fuel cell car, it can't offer it here in Branford, CT. There are only ten hydrogen stations in the U.S. for it to fill up, and most are in California.
Fortunately, the automaker is on the problem. They joined the Department of Energy's H2USA, which is looking to bolster the national infrastructure. Hopefully we'll start to see the fruits of this before the prototype's production iteration hits showrooms.
We're definitely looking forward to that here at Brandfon Honda. In the meantime, you can still sate your green ambitions with a number of eco-friendly models. Drop by our showroom to learn more!
