When it comes to navigation systems, these days there are multiple options to choose from. Oftentimes drivers admit that they like the ones on their smartphones best, but they aren't as convenient or safe to use while driving. This is how Honda came up with the idea to incorporate a useful navigation feature into its innovative HondaLink App.

The automaker developed a way to allow smartphone navigation to be integrated into a vehicle's built in display system. The first model to demonstrate this technology is the 2014 Honda Civic that comes with the Display Audio feature. This particular interface, which is available on 7-inch touchscreens featured on all Civic trim levels above the LX, allows drivers to control functions by touching and swiping the screen like a smartphone.

In order to make this integration work, a special cable is used to connect iPhone 5 models or higher that have the HondaLink App. It plugs into the vehicle's USB port, to give drivers access to navigation, weather, radio, Bluetooth, and other convenient functions that can be of assistance while driving. In the future, Honda hopes to make the app more versatile so that it can be used with Android phones as well.

As of now the new 2014 Civic, which will be available in dealerships soon, is the only model to feature Display Audio and HondaLink Integration. However, later next year it will be available to the 2015 Honda Fit as well.
