As of late, Honda has been waiting for the reboot to their ever-so-popular Odyssey minivan. This may come as a shock to some, especially because this is a time when larger vehicles such as SUV's and pick-ups are being downsized in order to appeal to Americans who need more fuel efficient vehicles. A vehicle like the Odyssey is still needed for the kids and cargo space.
The all new Odyssey for 2011 is "a key launch" for the Japanese auto maker. Sure, the company has introduced many state of the art green vehicles, such as Insight and the upcoming CR-Z sports hybrid, but some people just need a van to do the work.
Honda's engineers, all seven of them who worked on Odyssey, understood this. And they knew what needed improvement, as they owned 27 Odyssey vans between all of them over many years.
The redesigned 2011 Odyssey is 2 inches wider, an inch longer, and rides lower than previous models. It is more aerodynamic than its predecessor. Under the hood it has a re-engineered 3.5-liter V-6 engine, with variable cylinder management and EPA estimated fuel economy of 18 mpg city, 27 highway.
Odyssey is also the only minivan with independent rear suspension. The Japanese auto maker made the brakes 1 inch larger in diameter, now claiming best-in-class stopping distances.
Some fun additions include a center console between the two front seats, which can hold a purse and is removable. Underneath is a "coolbox" that can hold a six-pack of soda.
The second row of Odyssey seating can be fitted with three child seats, but can also pivot outward by 2 inches so three adults can sit in comfort.
Base price of an all new 2011 Honda Odyssey is $28,580, including shipping.
